GSO Test

Year 5

This year, we aim to give Year 5 a fun and practical experience in their learning. Our aim is to create beautiful friendships and reach emotional growth in preparation for Year 6. We will continue to take part in our Intergenerational Project at Lakeview in Thamesmead, where the children will have the opportunity to interact, play games, share stories and have fun with the elderly.

We are extremely excited about our forthcoming Year 5/Year 6 School Journey experience, which will take place in March. This will be a great opportunity for them to build their confidence and positive approach when faced with new challenges.

In English we will be focusing on adventure & narrative writing. Our book focus will be ‘Stormbreaker’ by Anthony Horowitz. We will closely observe the events in the story and study how to create tension, portray character feeling and observe the choice of words used by the author. We will explore the features of a promotional text and how to apply these features effectively will also be studied. As our final outcome, we will create our own chapter using vivid descriptions and figurative language.

As Mathematicians, we will be deepening our understanding of Roman Numerals and number and place value, being able to read and write numbers up to 1 million. We will recognise the value of each digit in any number up to 1 million. Next, we will add and subtract numbers with more than 4 digits, using both mental and written strategies. After that, we will explore factors, square and prime numbers, cube numbers and use the appropriate strategies when multiplying numbers by 10, 100 and 1000.

As Historians, we will be studying ‘The Ancient Egyptians’. We will begin by looking at what life was like in Ancient Egypt.  We will then move onto learning about what Ancient Egyptians writing system –   hieroglyphs.  We will then move onto learning about why are gods and goddesses important to societies.  Our journey will end by studying the pyramids and what they have taught us about Egyptian life.  All of our learning will be presented in a fact-file which will showcase our knowledge and learning.

As Scientists, we will study Living Things and Their Habitats:  The Study of Taxonomy.  We will understand how to classify and organise organisms and plant. We will complete a branching database, whilst researching & gathering information to help classify & organize. We will move onto classifying, organising animal groups, describe how living thing are classified into groups according to common observational characteristics.

Please be reminded that as part of the PE National Curriculum, your chid will do swimming once a week until Christmas. It will have a significant positive impact on your child’s progress if you could ensure that they read daily, learn and know their times tables and be able to spell the majority of the words on the Year5/6 spelling list (which is attached to your ‘Home Learning’ letter).
